Introduction

Nestled in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra, Prabalgad is a hidden gem for every trekking lover. With lush green trails, breathtaking views, and a touch of history, this fort offers an adventure that is both peaceful and exciting. Whether you’re a first-time trekker or an experienced one, the journey to Prabalgad promises fresh air, stunning landscapes, and stories from the past.

Starting the Journey

At 8 am, I left Panvel to begin my journey to Prabalgad. By 9 am, we aimed to arrive at the Prabalgad foothills. It is captivating to travel to Prabalgad during the rainy season, and the continuous disappearing of Prabalgad in the clouds and its subsequent reappearance heightens the sense of adventure and the desire to bravely reach the summit and complete the climb.

First Phase of the Trek

It all began with an easy, circuitous climb that wasn’t particularly difficult or exhausting. For roughly forty-five minutes, the round-trip walk routes continued into the dense Sahyadri hills, passing through the verdant, lush forest while surrounded by cheerful conversation.
As we made our way to the summit, the chilly wind blew into our souls.

We were held in place by prickly stones and red mud-filled shoes. We took a little water stop at the end of the first roundabout to replenish ourselves for the most amazing hike of our life.

Towards the Detour

Up until we got to the detour to Prabalgad and Kalavanti, everything was going according to expectation. It was almost time to begin traveling up the sole route that led to Prabalgad’s summit.
Because Prabalgad is more difficult and exhausting than Kalavanti, there were fewer trekkers there. Following some refreshments, we began to dig down Prabalgad’s muddy roads, arriving at a campsite in the village’s slopes.

The clouds made Prabalgad appear even more majestic, appealing, and enigmatic. There was a greater incentive than ever to make the expedition a success.

The Steep Climb

We entered a steep, rocky road that felt like a landslide as we continued on. Climbing was quite challenging and exhausting due to the large rocks that were piled along the route. The trail was rather neutral, but we noticed some monkeys roaming around the trees the entire way.

This path lasted for about 45 minutes, after which we reached the summit and had to walk for another 30 minutes through the dense trees to reach the mountain’s edge for a glimpse of Kalavanti.

The Summit Experience

Eventually, two hours after we started our trek, we arrived at Prabalgad’s edge and summit. Surrounded by mountains, we could see Matheran, Irshalgad, and Morbe Dam. The fog prevented us from seeing Kalavanti, but as the winds took over, the clouds briefly dispersed, exposing the majestic peak of Kalavanti concealed behind the cloud curtains.

The sight of Kalavanti and Matheran made the climb seem accomplished.

Exploring Historic Spots

You can take a detour on the way back that will take you to rajwadas, which are stone houses and structures that have stood the test of time. Following the trail, we discovered a pond full of water from the time of Shivaji Maharaj that was so clear that we could see the ground below.

After 700 more meters, we arrived at a location with the best view of Morbe Dam and Irshal Gad. Kalaburug, the watchtower used for watchkeeping, is located 1.7 kilometers further down the trail.
